Viola and the Eagle Feather
Viola and the Eagle Feather is a play conceived for young people which tells the story behind the new Canadian ten dollar bill. The play, which is told entirely in rhyme, connects the two prominent images present on the currency: namely the picture of Viola Desmond, a black businesswoman who fought against discriminatory legislation in Nova Scotia and the illustration of a Native Indian Eagle Feather. Three characters composed of Annie, a teenaged young girl, Viola, based upon Viola Desmond, and Kohana, a Native Indian Healer together manage to weave both the story of Viola’s struggle against discrimination with the Eagle Feather’s symbolism for truth, redemption and forgiveness. Through the process of trying to discover the meaning behind the images, the Audience is engaged and challenged to participate in solving the mystery of he images and their relationship to one another.
